Publications

This special edition “Hollow Sections” has been initiated by CIDECT and is thought to be the first of its kind. It summarizes a limited number of topics presented and discussed during the 2021 Annual CIDECT meeting. The present edition contains topics from the following areas of interest that are considered to be of growing or continuing importance:
  • Concrete Filled Hollow Sections
  • Welded Joints
  • Bolted Joints/Alternative methods of jointing
  • Fatigue & Damage Mechanics
  • Advanced Design
The content presented herein provides visibility to a limited amount of related research topics discussed in the meeting. It reflects currently focused research and gives direction for further discussion and upcoming topics. Since 1962 CIDECT initiates, supports, and at least partially sponsors research, standardization work and education for the use of structural steel hollow sections around the world. The relevant global design rules for hollow section design are continuously in development which is still been led by CIDECT today. One such example is the current modifications proposed for the new revision of the Eurocode which will extend the validity range for hollow sections, both in regard to the geometrical validity range as well as steel grades up to S690QH or S700MH. Along with the additional integration of weather resistant steels (e.g. S355J2WH) to the product standards EN 10210 & EN 10219, extended design opportunities are granted for safe, efficient and sustainable solutions with almost 100% recyclable steel. CIDECT will continue to support future developments, pushing alternative efficient design methods to focus the demand for guidance by designers which has increased in the last decade. As a first step “Design Guide No.4: Concrete-filled hollow section columns under static, impact, blast, seismic and fire loading” has been revised and updated to CIDECT members for distribution. In a similar manner, further Design Guides are already being considered for the future to ensure the structural hollow section remain a key part to future sustainable construction.

Much current CIDECT research activity is targeted at completing the body of knowledge which surrounds the structural behaviour of steel Structural Hollow Sections, and at interpreting and implementing this fundamental research. A new phase of research has now opened which is directly concerned with providing practical, economical and labour saving design solutions. All the work which is sponsored by CIDECT is made available to engineers, architects and students, world wide, through a range of research papers, software, design and architectural publications.
